Can AI replace people?

Are People More Important Than Things? A Christian Worldview

In a Christian Worldview, people are more important than things because we are created in God’s image and likeness (Genesis 1:26). This means that every person has inherent worth and dignity that comes from being made in God’s imageJesus Christ also taught that people should love their neighbors as themselves, and if we are to truly follow him (Matthew 22:39), we should even love others as He has loved us (John 13:34).

As we think of the massive experiment currently occuring with AI, the sophistication of the technology is forcing us to question what it means to be a person. I want to offer some questions that might help frame our approach to this dicussion.

  1. If I were lonely, would interacting with a sophisticated AI meet my need for interaction the same as a loved one sitting quietly beside me?
  2. How would I treat a vulnerable person (i.e. One without any immediate utility. For example, an infant) compared to a sophisticated AI? If I had to interact with one or the other to ensure it's future, which would I choose?

Through my understanding of scripture, and Christian Worldview, I believe that there's a God given dignity to people (image beareres of God) that makes us irreplacable by technology. While we might live in a society that values utility over personhood, I believe a Christian worldview has an appreciation for the value of people, and the irreplacable relationship between people and God.

At Great Lakes Bible College, we seek to equip students with the tools and relationships to tackle deep and important questions. We believe that Ministry of some type is a calling for every Christian, not just for those who will become 'full-time' ministers. Tuition is very affordable compared to other Christian Colleges and Universities in Ontario and Canada. Our Bible College is located in Waterloo, ON, Canada, however, in addition to in-person courses, we also offer live online learning opportunities.
